The History and Culture of Bled

Bled has been inhabited for more than a thousand years, and its history is woven through with the influence of different cultures and rulers. Its best-known landmark is Bled Castle, the oldest castle in Slovenia. Perched on a steep cliff above the lake, it was first mentioned in written records as early as 1004. Built for defence, the castle has been rebuilt and renovated many times over the centuries, and today houses a museum.

In the Middle Ages, Bled Island was an important religious centre. The church on the island, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was built in the 12th century and became a popular place of pilgrimage. According to legend, the island’s bell was first rung in 1534, after being brought there from a church that had sunk beneath the lake.
