Bled Cream Cake and the Bled Rose Slice: What’s the Difference
Bled Cream Cake and the Bled Rose Slice: What’s the Difference
Bled cream cake is the town’s classic dessert: puff pastry, cooked custard and whipped cream in four layers. The Bled Rose slice is the house version served in the lounge bar at Bled Rose Hotel — plated with fruit caviar and flower petals. The first is an institution; the second is a signature interpretation. Both are eaten at the same table.
What is Bled cream cake?
Cream cake — locally kremna rezina or kremšnita — is built from a layer of puff pastry, a layer of cooked vanilla custard, a layer of whipped cream and a final layer of pastry on top. Its reputation rests on proportion: the custard has to be firm enough that the slice cuts cleanly, and soft enough that it does not behave like a pudding.
For Bled it is part of the identity of the place. Plenty of visitors sit down for it and order nothing else, which is a perfectly legitimate way to visit.
What is the Bled Rose slice?
The Bled Rose slice is the house dessert of the lounge bar at Bled Rose Hotel. It takes the cream-cake idea and plates it with fruit caviar and flower petals — visually and in flavour it sits closer to a modern restaurant dessert than to a pastry-shop display.
It belongs to the same family as the pink Bled Rose cocktail, in which the hotel set out to capture its own colour and name. The two are meant as a pair.
Who makes the desserts at Rose Restaurant?
The sweet side of the menu is led by Pastry Chef Urša Sonnenwald, who trained in several Michelin-starred restaurants. Alongside the house slice, the menu carries seasonal desserts that change through the year — coconut, cherry or strawberry are not fixtures but a reflection of the season.
When is the best time to try it?
Any time. Dessert is not tied to a meal here — in the lounge bar it works as a stop in its own right after a walk around the lake or a climb up to the castle. In the warmer months you can eat it on the terrace.
